Eureka Kikuyu Origins & Specifications

Native to East Africa, Kikuyu was originally imported to Australia as a Pasture grass. Kikuyu is a fast repairing grass following wear and tolerates dry periods in summer. New male sterile varieties such as Village Green stay greener in winter and do not visibly flower. These varieties are available as turf only. Common types can be propagated by seed or vegetative methods. To read more about Eureka Kikuyu download the product tech sheet.

Why Choose Eureka Kikuyu grass for your lawn

Eureka Kikuyu grass is grown and recommended by Anco for its outstanding ability to repair from wear, its winter colour retention, and early spring Green up. Anco’s Eureka Kikuyu develops less thatch than some other Kikuyu types resulting in fewer maintenance requirements to maintain a good-looking lawn.

Eureka Kikuyu is the ideal grass for backyard lawns that receive lots of wear and tear from dogs, children, and general use. The creeping nature of Eureka Kikuyu will help the lawn to recover from excessive use faster than alternative grass types.

Use Kikuyu when a lush green lawn in full sun is required. A Eureka Kikuyu lawn will survive when short dry periods are experienced in summer. Due to its extensive root system, Eureka Kikuyu will not wilt in hot weather if given periodic watering. To perform at its best, Eureka Kikuyu requires a sunny position.

Cost of Eureka Kikuyu

Eureka Kikuyu is an economical grass type, especially when its outstanding repair qualities from wear are considered. At a generally cheaper price per square metre, your new lawn project will be more economical when compared to other lawn varieties and surface types.

How should I care for my Eureka Kikuyu lawn?

As is the case with most lawn types regular mowing during the growing seasons of Spring, Summer and Autumn is a key factor to maintaining a healthy and dense lawn canopy that is capable of resisting disease and wear.

A catcher should be used on Eureka Kikuyu to minimise thatch development and inhibit disease build-up. If mown regularly Eureka will look outstanding when cut at 20mm but will still look good if mown to lengths of up to 35mm. If mown with a Cylinder mower it will tolerate and flourish at 15mm and provide a dense tight surface.

Irrigate Eureka Kikuyu in summer and when prolonged dry periods are experienced in the warmer months. The best watering practice is to irrigate for long periods and infrequently and as required. This watering regime establishes a deep root system that enables the lawn to cope with long dry, and hot periods over summer. Shallow root zones are a result of short and frequent watering and should be avoided.

In Spring, early Summer and Autumn apply a high Nitrogen type fertiliser such as this: Lawn Solutions Premium Lawn Food 4kg.

If a thatch layer has developed, Eureka Kikuyu turf will benefit from a very short mow with a catcher in its second spring. Drop your mower down to its lowest level and scalp off the thatch layer. The lawn will be brown for a few weeks and recover well if irrigated and fertilised following the spring scalping process. This process will aid irrigation water and rainfall to penetrate evenly into the soil and eliminates slight undulations in lawn levels. It also reduces unsightly patchiness caused by the mower from occurring.

Spring is also an ideal time to Topdress Eureka with sandy soil. This will eliminate low spots in the lawn that may hold water in winter.

If dry spots are observed in Summer, applying a wetting agent will eradicate them and provide an even colour to the lawn. Use this product from late November if dry patches or wilting are present Wetta Soil Hose-On Soil Wetter 2L pack.

In Autumn the use of a Complete fertiliser such as Anco Lawn Starter will help maintain the root system over winter and aid in a faster Spring Green up of the dormant grass.

Is Eureka Kikuyu weed resistant?

Is Eureka Kikuyu weed resistant?

If correctly maintained Eureka Kikuyu will inhibit weed invasion in your lawn better than most other lawn types due to its aggressive nature, thick canopy and rapid wear recovery. The correct use of a pre-emergent herbicide will keep your Kikuyu lawn free of most seeded weed types. Use Oxafert in early autumn and late winter for Wintergrass weed control in Eureka Kikuyu.

Eureka Kikuyu Lawn FAQs

Eureka Kikuyu prefers full sun to perform at its optimum. It is not shade tolerant, however if it receives 5 hours of direct sunlight per day, Eureka will look great at most times of the year.

Eureka Kikuyu is a warm season grass and in the cooler regions of Victoria will lose colour in the winter months. It is very hard to kill a Kikuyu lawn without using a herbicide.

Eureka Kikuyu is an ideal turf to harvest as the Rhizomes and stolons hold the turf together and it is easy to handle when laying. Eureka Kikuyu can be laid year-round in Melbourne with excellent results, making it an ideal choice to establish from turf in a sunny position at any time of year.

Eureka Kikuyu as all turf varieties do, requires a weed free area of soil when being laid. Once established Eureka Kikuyu will resist weed invasion due to its aggressive nature and rapid recovery from wear.

Eureka Kikuyu requires watering in the warmer months to stay lush green. Eureka is reasonably drought tolerant and will survive long periods without irrigation. To promote a deep root system Eureka should be watered when signs of wilt occur. When watering all established turf, the best practice is to irrigate for a long period and infrequently. This promotes a deep root system as opposed to frequent shallow watering practices.

Frequent mowing is a key ingredient to keeping a Eureka Kikuyu lawn in good shape. Observe the general rule of removing 1/3 of the leaf length per mow and mow regularly to keep the turf canopy dense and weed resistant. Water when signs of wilt occur and feed the Eureka lawn at least once a season.

Unlike DNA Certified Sir Walter, the Eureka Kikuyu variety does not tolerate shade. It is however much faster to recover from severe wear due to its extensive rhizome activity and this makes it the ideal backyard grass if grown in full sun.

Eureka Kikuyu establishes rapidly from turf and your new turf lawn will be useable faster than most other turf types especially when laid in the warm months from October until April.

As is the case with all lawn types you should not overwater them. Too much water encourages shallow root systems and reduces drought tolerance. Waterlogged soils also encourage the development of root disease in turf.

Eureka Kikuyu will tolerate close mowing if mown regularly. It is used by some Golf courses in Fairways and responds well to mowing with a standard lawn mower. If mown with a Cylinder mower it can be cut as low as 15mm with good results.

There are few things that will totally kill Eureka Kikuyu other than certain herbicides. Eureka will tolerate small numbers of Black beetle larvae however plague numbers of this lawn pest will desiccate areas of the lawn and they should be treated if their presence is suspected.

Eureka responds well to an application of a high Nitrogen lawn food and a fertility program that incorporates such fertilisers will keep the lawn in good condition. Apply fertiliser at the start of each season except for winter.

Eureka Kikuyu can be laid at any time of year. It is slower to establish its root system if laid from June to August.

Spring, Summer and Autumn are the ideal time of year for rapidly establishing Eureka Kikuyu from turf. It can be laid in winter however the establishment period is longer in the cooler months.

Eureka Kikuyu will temporarily discolour after frosts or long cool periods such as experienced in a Victorian winter. There are maintenance methods of retaining its colour and products such as ColourGuard will instantly green up a dormant and discoloured lawn.

In November when Eureka is growing rapidly and fully recovered from winter conditions the removal of thatch by mowing the lawn short will improve your lawns appearance. Following the short cut in November feed the lawn with a High Nitrogen lawn food and thoroughly irrigate. The brown lawn caused by the short scalp mowing will quickly recover and look better than ever.

If you are adequately watering your Kikuyu lawn and it appears to be dying in the warm months you should check for the presence of Black Beetle larvae that chew on the roots of the lawn. Apart from too much wear in winter this is one of the few reasons that will affect the appearance and health of Eureka Kikuyu.

Overwatering will cause your lawn to develop a soft and mushy leaf that is disease prone. It can also lead to root diseases that will exhibit as brown to yellow patches. A healthy Eureka Kikuyu lawn will not require irrigation from April until late September unless a fertiliser or other product that requires watering in has been applied.
