The first step in ensuring the smooth sailing of any project which requires laying turf is simple.
Make sure you have enough of it!
To help you work out just how much turf you need, Anco Turf has devised this handy Lawn Calculator.
With that in mind, here are some answers to frequently asked questions regarding measuring turf.
To work out the amount of turf you need for your project, you need to calculate the area of the place you will be laying turf.
The area is typically calculated in square meters (m2).
How you calculate the area will depend on the shape of the space you are placing the turf.
Our Lawn Calculator makes this easy for you.
Select the shape of the space you will be installing turf to see what measurements you require, take the necessary measurements, and input them into the calculator to see how much turf you need for that space.
If your lawn requires multiple shapes, for example, a square base that is rounded off, you may need to combine multiple shapes to work out how much turf you need.
It is always recommended you add five per cent to your requirements and round-up to the nearest square meter to ensure you have enough turf to complete your installation.
Ordering extra is a good idea if you need to cut your roll of turf to shape it to bends or curves in the area you are laying turf.

Anco Turf supplies turf in square meters (m2).
You can order as little as 1m2 or as much as you need, pending availability of the turf you require.
Anco Turf will cut the roll of turf to match your order and deliver to you at your desired address across Melbourne or wider Victoria.
Site preparation is key to ensuring a successful lawn installation.
Before laying turf, ensure you have completed the following steps:
1. Use a lawn rotary hoe or dig the area evenly to a depth of 100mm to 150mm
2. If there is a slope, ensure it is directed away from your house
3. Check your soil’s PH levels and, if required, add the recommended dose of lime
4. Rake in a complete lawn fertiliser to optimise your soil
5. Rake and smooth the soil to remove any rocks, roots or large clods
6. Roll and consolidate the soil lightly to ensure it is firm and ready for your new turf
Completing the above steps will help ensure your area is ready for your new turf.
No, you cannot lay turf over existing grass.
You should remove all existing grass from the site, and you should ensure the site is adequately prepared before laying new turf.
Spring and autumn are the best times to lay new turf.
These milder seasons, as opposed to the more extreme ones of summer and winter, typically provide better conditions for the successful installation of new lawns
Laying turf during a consistently rainy spell can also work out well.
Of course, it pays to check the forecast before you order and install turf in Melbourne.
As we know, Melbourne’s trademark unpredictable weather means that even in the typically moderate spring and autumn seasons, it is not unknown for unseasonably hot or cold patches of weather.
Once you have laid your turf, topsoil is a great way to level your lawn and promote excellent growth.
Of course, whilst topsoil is a critical aspect of growing and maintaining a healthy lawn, it is essential not to use too much of it to smother the grass.
When applying topsoil, it is important not to smother the grass.
Typically, 2-3 applications of 5mm of topsoil across the lawn area during the growing season will do the trick.
Topsoil should not be applied after mid-February.
